Minecraft igloos: the hidden basement and what it hands you

Key takeaways

Igloos are the smallest generated structure in Minecraft that is worth going out of your way for. From the outside it is a snow dome with a bed, a crafting table and a furnace – a shelter, nothing more. About half of them have a trapdoor hidden under a carpet, and what is under that trapdoor is one of the best early-game packages in the game.

This guide covers where they generate, what the basement actually contains, how to use the curing setup it hands you, and what changed in the 26.4 snapshots.

Where they generate

Igloos appear in three biomes: snowy plains, snowy taiga and snowy slopes. They sit on the surface, they are small, and they are white against white – which makes them genuinely easy to miss.

Finding one:

The surface room always contains a bed, a crafting table, a furnace and a redstone torch. The torch is the tell that something is odd – there is no reason for a redstone torch in a shelter, and it is lighting the stairwell below.

What is in the basement

Under a carpet on the floor is a trapdoor, and under that a ladder down to a small laboratory. Roughly half of igloos have one.

Contents:

Read that list as a kit rather than as loot. Splash potion of Weakness plus golden apple is exactly the two-item recipe for curing a zombie villager, and there is a zombie villager sitting right there. The structure is a tutorial for a mechanic the game never explains.

Curing the villager

The procedure, since the igloo hands you everything:

The payoff is the part worth planning for. A cured villager offers permanently discounted trades, and the discount is large. Doing it once in an igloo is a demonstration; doing it deliberately at a trading hall is one of the strongest economic moves in the game. Our trading hall and curing guide covers scaling it up, and our villager trading explainer covers the mechanics underneath.

One warning: a cured villager is a villager, and villagers in a snowy biome with no shelter do not last. If you intend to keep this one, bring it home. A boat is the standard method – our boat guide covers loading a villager as a passenger.

The Flurry disc

New in 26.4 Snapshot 7. The music disc Flurry, by Hyper Potions, has a chance of appearing in igloo basement chests.

Two things follow from that:

Flurry outputs comparator signal strength 7 in a jukebox, which matters if you build anything that reads disc identity. Our music disc guide covers that mechanic and the rest of the disc sources, and our Snapshot 7 coverage has the full release notes.

What to take and what to leave

The igloo is small enough to strip completely in two minutes. Worth taking:

Worth leaving: the bed and the furnace, if you intend to use the igloo as a forward base. A pre-built shelter with a bed in a biome with no wood is worth more as a structure than as materials, and setting your spawn there costs nothing. Our respawn guide covers making that stick.

The honest assessment

An igloo is not a destination. You will not find one by searching, and no seed is worth loading because it has an igloo near spawn. What it is, is the single best thing that can happen to you on a cold start – a shelter, a brewing stand, a curing kit and now a music disc, in a biome that otherwise gives you almost nothing.

That makes it worth knowing the silhouette. Our guide to reading a seed early covers what else to judge in a snowy world, and the short version is that an igloo plus a village within a few hundred blocks turns the hardest start in the game into one of the more interesting ones.
