Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 7 adds Calcite block sets and a new music disc

Key takeaways

Every game drop has a snapshot where the content stops and the polish starts. Snapshot 7, published 3 November, is that build – Mojang states plainly that these are the final gameplay features for the upcoming drop. What it ships is a large one: Calcite finally gets the full block-set treatment, nine new blocks in one go.

There is also a new music disc, a rebuilt main menu panorama, two more adjustments to the Freezing system, and the first real accessibility work on gameplay screens the game has had.

The Calcite block sets

Calcite has been in Minecraft since amethyst geodes arrived and has spent that entire time as a single cube with no variants. Snapshot 7 gives it three families:

Calcite. Now has Pillar, Slab, Stair and Wall variants. All four can be cut in a Stonecutter.

Polished Calcite. Crafted from 2×2 Calcite blocks, with Slab, Stair and Wall variants. All cuttable.

Polished Calcite Bricks. Crafted from 2×2 Polished Calcite, with Slab, Stair and Wall variants. All cuttable.

Note what that gives you: three surface treatments of the same near-white stone, each with the same shape set. Plain calcite has a faint grain, polished is smooth, bricks have a pattern. That is exactly the three-value system that makes a monochrome build readable, delivered in one material.

All three belong to the Slow Bouncy Sulfur Cube archetype, which is a different group from the Fast Sliding ice and snow bricks.

The Pillar variant deserves a mention on its own. Pillar blocks are rare in Minecraft – quartz, purpur, basalt, bone and deepslate have them and not much else. A vertical-grain near-white pillar is a genuinely useful piece that the palette did not have. Our block palette guide goes through what the three sets allow.

Flurry

A new music disc with the track Flurry by Hyper Potions. Three facts:

The igloo basement is an interesting choice of home. Only about half of igloos generate with a basement, and that basement already holds a brewing stand, a zombie villager and a golden apple – it is one of the more rewarding small structures in the game. Adding a disc to it gives players a reason to check every igloo rather than just the ones they stumble into. Our structure loot notes covers what else is down there and how to find one.

The comparator value of 7 matters more than it looks. With jukebox playlists running, the disc in the slot changes automatically and so does the comparator output – which makes a playlist a slow automatic signal sequencer. Our music disc guide covers that trick, and 7 is now another step on the ladder you can decode.

The Freezing adjustments

Two changes, both narrowing the system further:

Strays also now spawn in a defined biome list: Deep Frozen Ocean, Frozen Ocean, Frozen Peaks, Frozen River, Jagged Peaks and Snowy Slopes. That is a significant expansion – Strays were previously tied to snowy plains and the new Ice Caves. Our ice spikes seed list covers what that means for mountain exploration, and our earlier freezing changes cover how the system got here.

Accessibility and UI

The part of this snapshot that will outlast the game drop. Gameplay screens – the crafting table, the enchanting table, villager trades – now support keyboard navigation and narration. Mojang calls it a first step and points at the feedback site.

How it works:

Alongside it: hovering a list entry now outlines it in grey, the mouse cursor hides while navigating by keyboard and returns when the mouse moves, and the recipe book button gained a tooltip. Small things, but a crafting interface you can drive without a mouse is a real change for anyone who needs it.

The graphics API reversal

Worth flagging because it will confuse people. The Graphics API video setting’s Default option now randomly picks either OpenGL or Vulkan on each startup.

Mojang’s note explains it: the snapshot series has been defaulting to Vulkan, which means the OpenGL backend has had almost no testing since the recent rendering changes. Randomising the default spreads testing across both. They state it will be reverted in a future snapshot.

Practical consequence: if your frame rate or your shader behaviour changes between sessions for no apparent reason, this is why. Set the option explicitly rather than leaving it on Default while this is live. Our coverage of the Vulkan switch covers what changed originally.

Our read

Nine Calcite blocks in one snapshot is the largest single addition to the building palette this cycle, and it arrives in the build Mojang says closes the feature list. That ordering is telling – the drop’s headline is ice caves and a new mob, but the thing players will still be using in two years is a near-white stone with pillars, polished variants and bricks.

The accessibility work is the piece that deserves more attention than it will get. Minecraft’s inventory screens have been mouse-only for fifteen years, and the fix shipped quietly in the same build as a music disc. It is a first step and it is framed as one, but it is the kind of first step that is hard to take and easy to skip.
