Key takeaways
- Woodland mansions generate only in dark forest biomes and only thousands of blocks from spawn, which makes them the hardest structure to find by exploration.
- A cartographer villager sells an explorer map to the nearest one, and that is the only reliable way to locate one.
- The mansion is the sole source of the totem of undying and one of two places allays generate, which is what justifies the trip.
Woodland mansions are the largest generated structure in Minecraft and the one most players never visit. The reason is distance. They generate exclusively in dark forest biomes, with enormous spacing between them, and the nearest one to spawn is routinely several thousand blocks away.
Searching for “woodland mansion seeds” is therefore a slightly different exercise from searching for a village – the question is not whether one exists but how far it is, and whether the rest of the spawn is worth keeping while you make the journey.
What is inside
The mansion is three storeys of dark oak and cobblestone with a procedurally assembled interior – rooms are drawn from a set of templates and arranged differently every time. Contents:
- Evokers, which drop the totem of undying. This is the only place totems come from outside a raid.
- Vindicators, which hit hard and are the main combat threat.
- Allays, held in cages in specific rooms. Mansions and pillager outposts are the only two sources.
- Chests scattered through the rooms, with a loot table including enchanted books, diamonds and horse armour.
- Secret rooms, with no door, that have to be broken into.
The totem is the real prize. It cancels death once, which changes how you can play the rest of the game. Our raids and totems guide covers the other route, and a raid farm eventually outproduces mansion hunting – but a raid farm is a project and a mansion is a trip.
Allays matter more than they look. An allay picks up items matching what you hand it and brings them back, which makes it a free item collector for any farm without hoppers. Our item sorter guide covers the redstone alternative.

How to find one
Three approaches, and only one works reliably.
The cartographer map. A cartographer villager at journeyman level sells a woodland explorer map for emeralds and a compass. The map points at the nearest mansion from where the villager is. This is the method. Everything else is luck.
Getting there: find or cure a cartographer, trade up to journeyman, buy the map. Our trading hall guide covers building a villager setup that lets you reroll trades until the map appears, and our villager trading explainer covers levelling one up.
Finding dark forest and searching it. Possible but slow. Dark forest is itself uncommon, and a mansion inside one is still a needle – the canopy is dense enough that you can fly over a mansion and not see it. If you do this, fly high and look for the roof shape, which is the only straight line in a forest.
Reading the seed. If you generated the world yourself and know the seed, external tools will give you coordinates. Not something the game provides.
A long-range rendering mod makes the second approach considerably less painful – our LOD rendering review covers what that costs in frames, and a mansion roof is visible from much further than vanilla render distance allows.
Judging a spawn
Since the mansion is always far away, the things to judge are the ones that get you there.
A village with a cartographer nearby. This is the single most important factor and it is more important than the mansion’s own distance. No cartographer, no map, no mansion. Our village finding guide covers the search.
Enough resources for the trip. A mansion is a combat structure. You want diamond gear, a bow, food and a stack of blocks before you set out. A spawn with early iron and a cave system matters more than the mansion’s coordinates.
A route that is not all ocean. Travel over land is slow but survivable. Several thousand blocks of open ocean before an elytra is a different proposition. Our boat guide covers making that crossing bearable.
Dark forest within reach. If the biome itself is close, the mansion is likely closer than average. Dark forest is also a decent biome in its own right – dark oak is one of the better building woods and it is the only source.

Surviving the mansion
The mansion is dangerous in a specific way: it is dark, it is full of rooms, and the mobs inside do not spawn gradually – they are already there, placed at generation.
What works:
- Light as you go. Mansion interiors are unlit and ordinary hostile mobs spawn inside on top of the illagers. Our light levels guide covers the threshold.
- Clear room by room, not floor by floor. Vindicators hit for a large amount and three at once in a corridor is how trips end.
- Break in from outside. You do not have to use the front door. Mining through an exterior wall into a room you can see puts the fight on your terms.
- Bring a shield. Vindicator damage is physical and a shield cuts it. Evoker fangs go through it.
- Find the secret rooms. Rooms with no door exist and hold loot. Walking the perimeter of each floor and noting where the space does not add up is how you find them.
Our item recovery guide covers the realistic worst case – a death several thousand blocks from home is the most expensive one in the game.
The dark forest itself
Worth a note because you will be standing in it. Dark forest has dense dark oak canopy, which means the ground is dark enough for hostile mobs to spawn in broad daylight. It is one of only two biomes where that happens.
That makes it unpleasant to travel through and interesting to build in. Dark oak is the darkest wood in the game, huge mushrooms generate there, and the permanent gloom is a genuine aesthetic rather than a problem if you lean into it. Our decay and overgrowth guide covers the style that suits it.

Is it worth the trip
Once, yes. The totem alone changes the risk calculation for everything you do afterwards, and the allays are genuinely useful. A single mansion run returns more value than most structures in the game.
Repeatedly, no. Mansions are too far apart to farm, and a raid farm produces totems faster with no travel at all. Treat the mansion as a mid-game milestone rather than a resource, do it properly with good gear, and take the dark oak home with you. Our structures worth exploring guide covers where it ranks against everything else.
