Summary
- 26.3 Snapshot 1 arrived on 23 June 2026, one week after Chaos Cubed shipped.
- It introduced the dappled forest biome, abandoned camps, poplar trees and red shrubs.
- The turnaround between a drop shipping and the next one entering testing was seven days.
Seven days. That is the gap between Chaos Cubed reaching players on 16 June and the first snapshot of the next drop appearing on 23 June, with a new biome already in it.
What was in it
The dappled forest, with poplar trees and red shrubs, and abandoned camps to find inside it. Mojang’s own framing was a question – if nobody had been to the dappled forest before, who built the abandoned camp – which is a better piece of environmental writing than most patch notes attempt.
That question is the whole design brief for the structure. A camp with no obvious owner is more interesting than a village with a population.

The pace this implies
A biome in the first snapshot means it was built during the previous drop’s pre-release phase. The public cycle and the internal one overlap by months, and a snapshot is a window into work that started long before.
For players tracking development, that is worth internalising. By the time you see a feature in snapshot 1, the team has already moved on to the middle of the drop.

What changed between here and release
A great deal. Cushions and straw beds did not arrive until Snapshot 3 on 7 July. Concrete stairs and slabs came in Snapshot 7 on 4 August. The explorer maps for eight biomes were part of the same late batch.
The biome that shipped on 15 September is recognisably the one in this snapshot, and the drop around it roughly doubled in the intervening three months.
Testing it then, playing it now
Everything in this snapshot is in the release build, so there is no reason to run it today. It is useful as a record of what the drop looked like before the rest was attached – and as a reminder that the first snapshot of a cycle is a statement of intent rather than a preview of the result.

Adding a biome versus changing the biome layer
Vanilla adds biomes by inserting them into the existing climate grid. Worldgen mods usually do something more aggressive – they replace the layer that decides which biome goes where.
The difference is why a new vanilla biome never breaks an existing world’s feel, and a biome mod often does. What changes when you replace Minecraft’s biome layer is the clearest way to see which kind of change you are looking at.
Finding one without cheating
A new biome is only as good as your odds of stumbling into it, and those odds are set by the climate parameters, not by luck. The practical approach is the same one that works for villages: know which neighbouring biomes it borders, and travel along that boundary rather than in a straight line.
The village version of that technique is written up in how to find a village seed worth starting on, and the reasoning transfers directly.
What Snapshot 1 usually tells you
- The theme of the drop, stated plainly.
- The biome or dimension the rest of the features will attach to.
- Nothing about balance, because none of it is balanced yet.
Reading Snapshot 1 as a statement of intent rather than a feature list is the right frame. Chaos Cubed’s first snapshot looked thin too, and the drop filled in around it.
Dates
26.3 Snapshot 1 arrived 23 June 2026, one week after Chaos Cubed shipped. The drop released as Wilderness Bound on 15 September 2026.
How to read the first snapshot of any drop
Look for the noun, not the list. Snapshot 1 of 26.2 was about a material; Snapshot 1 of 26.3 was about a place. That noun is what the next eight snapshots will attach features to.
Once you have it, the rest of the cycle is predictable in shape if not in detail – blocks that fit the place, a structure that belongs in it, and one or two items that only make sense there.
What actually followed
- Snapshot 3, 7 July – cushions and straw beds, the camping items.
- Snapshot 6, 28 July – world options.
- Snapshot 7, 4 August – concrete stairs and slabs.
- Pre-Release 1, 1 September.
- Release, 15 September 2026.
The camping theme announced in June carried the whole way through. Snapshot 1 was accurate.
Worth knowing
A new biome does not appear in terrain you have already generated. If you want to see it in an existing world, you have to travel to chunks that have never been loaded – usually a few thousand blocks in any direction.
