EntityCulling 1.10.5 fixes a NeoForge startup crash

Key takeaways

A crash on startup is the worst class of bug, because it gives the player no information beyond the fact that the game is gone. EntityCulling 1.10.5, out on 20 June 2026, fixed one of those – older NeoForge builds were crashing on launch over keybind registration.

What the mod actually does

Minecraft renders entities it cannot see. A mob behind a wall, in a room you are not in, on the far side of a hill – the game still spends time on it, because the check for whether something is visible is itself expensive.

EntityCulling runs that check asynchronously, on a separate thread, using ray casts. Entities that fail it are skipped entirely. On a farm with four hundred mobs in it, the difference is not subtle.

Frame rate overlay in a dense Minecraft build

Why culling is the biggest lever in Minecraft performance

Because the game is generous by default. It draws block faces you cannot see, ticks things you are nowhere near, and renders entities behind solid walls – all of which is safe, simple and slow.

The whole reason this class of mod exists is that “do not draw what nobody can see” turns out to be a hard problem stated simply. Why Minecraft renders faces you cannot see goes through what the game decides and what it does not.

Where it helps most

Interior view of a crowded base

Where it helps least is an empty exploration world, where there is nothing to cull. If your frame rate is bad standing in a field, this is not your fix.

Stacking it with everything else

EntityCulling is compatible with the usual stack and is generally installed alongside a chunk renderer rather than instead of one – they solve different halves of the same complaint. The five-mod shortlist lays out which one addresses which symptom, which matters because installing all of them and hoping is how people end up with a mod list they cannot debug.

Version notes

1.10.5 covers 26.2 for Fabric, NeoForge and Forge. The keybind crash affected NeoForge builds older than the current line; Fabric users were never affected and can update at leisure.

If your game stopped launching in June after a NeoForge update, this was probably why.

How the ray casting works

For each entity, the mod casts rays from the camera towards it. If every ray hits a solid block first, the entity is not visible and is skipped. The work happens on a separate thread so it does not block the render loop.

That threading is the clever part. A visibility check that costs more than drawing the entity would be pointless, and doing it synchronously would be exactly that.

Why vanilla does not do this

Because it is not free and it is not always correct. Ray casting can miss an entity visible through a one-block gap at an unusual angle, producing a pop-in. Vanilla’s tolerance for visual glitches is lower than a performance mod’s, so it draws conservatively.

Almost every optimisation mod is making this same trade in a different place: accept a rare visual imperfection, gain a consistent frame rate.

Configuring it

The defaults are well chosen and most people never change them. The exclusion list is the one worth knowing about, because armour stands used as decoration are the usual thing people want always visible.

Measuring the benefit

Turn on the debug screen and look at the entity line – it shows rendered versus total. In a mob farm, the gap should be enormous. If it is not, the mod is either not loaded or is being defeated by the geometry.

A glass-walled mob farm defeats it completely, which surprises people. Entities behind glass are visible, so nothing gets culled, and the fix is to use a solid wall with a viewing slot rather than a transparent one.

Version availability

1.10.5 covers 26.2 across Fabric, NeoForge and Forge from a single release. The mod has maintained broad loader support for years, which is part of why it appears in so many packs regardless of which loader they target.

Worth restating plainly: culling mods are the highest-return performance install for most players, and they are also the easiest to install for the wrong reason. If your complaint is low frame rate in an empty field, nothing here helps. If your complaint is that your mob farm turns the game into a slideshow, this is the fix and it is a large one. Match the mod to the symptom and the results are dramatic; install by reputation and they are nothing.
