Minecraft ocean monument seeds: sponges, elder guardians and what to bring

Key takeaways

Ocean monuments are the structure that punishes you for being unprepared more thoroughly than any other. They are underwater, they are dark, the mobs hit hard, and the boss mob applies a debuff specifically designed to stop you from digging your way out of trouble.

They are also the only place sponges exist, and sponges are the only item in Minecraft that removes water. For anyone building underwater, that makes a monument raid not optional.

What generates

Monuments appear in deep ocean biomes, including the deep frozen, deep cold and deep lukewarm variants. The structure is prismarine throughout, roughly 58 blocks square, with a fixed external shape and a semi-random interior.

Contents:

Note the sponge room is not guaranteed. If sponges are the goal, you may need more than one monument. Our notes on the overhaul mod cover a version with more varied interiors.

Mining Fatigue is the fight

Elder guardians apply Mining Fatigue III to any player within about 50 blocks, on sight, repeatedly. The effect lasts five minutes and reapplies.

Mining Fatigue III reduces mining speed to the point where breaking a prismarine block by hand takes minutes. It is not a nuisance – it removes your ability to tunnel, which is how you would otherwise handle an unfamiliar structure.

Three ways to deal with it:

Our status effects guide covers what else milk clears, and the short version is that it removes everything including your own buffs – so drink it deliberately.

What to bring

The loadout decides whether this is a fight or a drowning.

Our brewing guide covers making the potions, and water breathing is the one worth making in bulk.

Sponges

The reason to go. A sponge absorbs water in a radius when placed, turning into a wet sponge. Smelt the wet sponge in a furnace and it is dry again, reusable indefinitely.

Nothing else in Minecraft removes water. Not buckets at scale, not sand, not anything. For underwater building, draining a base site, or clearing a flooded cave, sponges are the only tool – and they come from exactly one structure that generates in roughly a quarter of monuments.

Practical notes:

Our underwater base guide covers what you can actually do once you have a stack.

Prismarine as a material

Underrated and the thing you will have most of. A monument is tens of thousands of blocks of prismarine in four variants – rough prismarine with its shifting colour animation, prismarine bricks, dark prismarine, and sea lanterns.

The animated texture is the distinctive part. Prismarine slowly shifts between green and blue tones, which is the only animated solid block in the game outside of the Nether portal. In a build it reads as alive.

Sea lanterns are the practical prize – a full-brightness light source that is a solid block, which torches and lanterns are not. Our lighting design guide covers where a flush light source is worth more than a decorative one.

Judging an ocean spawn

A monument near spawn is worth less than people think, because you cannot do anything about it until you have potions, enchanted gear and a way to breathe. What matters:

A coast with land resources. You are coming back here repeatedly and you need a base on shore.

Distance you can boat. Monument raids mean carrying a lot of material out. Our boat guide covers chest boats, which are the right vehicle for this specifically.

More than one monument. Because only a quarter have sponge rooms, a seed with two or three in reach is worth more than one close by.

Warm ocean nearby, for coral and a conduit’s prismarine needs. The conduit itself needs nautilus shells from drowned, which are easier to farm in a different ocean type.

Our structures worth exploring guide ranks the monument against the rest, and the honest placement is high value, high preparation, and not something to attempt in your first week.
