Full diamond armour does not halve incoming damage. It reduces it by a specific percentage that depends on armour points, on toughness, and on how large the hit was – and the third one is why players who have never lost a fight in diamond suddenly die to a warden.
Here is the actual model, and what it means for which armour you should wear.
Armour points are the base
Every armour piece contributes points. A full set gives a total that is displayed as the chestplate icons above your health bar, and each point is worth four percent damage reduction against normal damage.
Full diamond and full netherite both reach twenty points, which is the cap, and twenty points is eighty percent reduction. That is where the common belief that netherite is no tougher than diamond comes from, and it is half right.
Iron reaches fifteen points, so sixty percent. Chainmail twelve, gold eleven, leather seven. The gap between iron and diamond is smaller than most players assume and the gap between leather and iron is enormous.
Toughness is why netherite is different
Netherite has the same armour points as diamond and a higher toughness value. Toughness does not increase reduction against small hits. It reduces how much armour is bypassed by large ones.
Without toughness, a big enough hit cuts through armour points at a rate proportional to its size. Toughness slows that erosion. The practical result: against a skeleton arrow, diamond and netherite perform identically. Against a charged creeper or a warden, netherite is meaningfully better.
That is the correct way to decide whether the upgrade is worth the ancient debris. If your deaths are from chip damage, it is not. If your deaths are from single enormous hits, it is.

Protection stacks on top, separately
Enchantment reduction is calculated after armour reduction, from a separate pool that caps at eighty percent on its own. Protection IV on all four pieces is the standard target.
The specific protections – Blast, Fire, Projectile – give more reduction against their damage type than plain Protection does, but nothing against anything else. Mixing them across pieces is a real strategy and a fiddly one. For general play, four pieces of Protection IV is the answer, and the specialised sets are for a specific fight you have already lost once.
Feather Falling is the exception worth naming, because fall damage ignores most of what armour does and Feather Falling IV does not. It is the single highest-value enchantment in the game by deaths prevented.
What armour does not protect against
- Starvation – no reduction at all. Managed by keeping saturation up, not by gear.
- Drowning and suffocation – unaffected by armour points.
- Void damage – unaffected by anything.
- Poison and wither – bypass armour entirely, which is what makes them dangerous to well-equipped players.
- Warden sonic boom – ignores armour points. This is why a full netherite player dies in an ancient city and cannot work out what went wrong.
That last category is the one that catches people. Gear solves physical damage and does nothing for the rest, which is why a well-prepared trip involves milk, golden apples and an escape route rather than one more armour upgrade.

Durability, and the real cost of a good set
Armour takes durability damage proportional to damage absorbed, not to hits taken. A set that blocks a lot of damage wears out faster, which is correct but counterintuitive.
Netherite’s durability advantage over diamond is substantial and it is fire resistant when dropped, which matters more in practice than the toughness value for most players. Losing a set to lava is the most common way good gear disappears.
Unbreaking III roughly quadruples effective durability and Mending removes the maintenance problem entirely if you have an XP source. Both are worth more than the material upgrade underneath them.
What to actually wear, by stage
- Early: iron, unenchanted. Sixty percent reduction for a trivial cost. Do not wait for diamond.
- Mid: iron with Protection, or diamond unenchanted. Enchanted iron beats bare diamond for most damage types.
- Standard: diamond, Protection IV throughout, Unbreaking III, Feather Falling IV on boots, Mending where you can.
- Late: netherite, same enchantments. The upgrade is for burst damage and lava safety, not for everyday reduction.
Point two is the one worth acting on. A player with enchanted iron is better protected than a player with fresh diamond, and iron is not a limited resource once an iron farm is running.
Quick reference
- 1 armour point = 4 percent reduction. Cap 20 points = 80 percent.
- Diamond and netherite both hit the 20-point cap. Netherite adds toughness, which only matters against large hits.
- Protection is a second, separate reduction pool, also capped at 80 percent.
- Poison, wither, starvation, drowning, void and sonic boom ignore armour points.
- Feather Falling IV prevents more deaths than any armour material upgrade.
If you are dying with good gear on, the answer is almost never more armour. It is one of the damage types on that list, and the fix for those is consumables and positioning – the same reasoning behind planning for the recovery run before you go somewhere dangerous.
