Iron farms explained: how golem spawning works and why yours produces nothing

An iron farm turns a village into a renewable source of iron, and it works because of a mechanic that has nothing to do with iron: villagers panicking. Understanding golem spawning is what separates a farm that produces a hundred ingots an hour from one that produces nothing.

Why golems spawn

A village spawns an iron golem when enough villagers have recently been frightened, there is a valid spawning space, and no golem already exists nearby. The frightening is usually done by a zombie the villagers can see.

Three conditions, all controllable, which is why the farm design has been stable for years.

The components

  1. Three villagers with beds and workstations, so they register as a village.
  2. A zombie in sight of them but unable to reach them.
  3. A spawning platform the game will choose for the golem.
  4. A disposal system – lava, a drop, or a killing chamber.
  5. Collection hoppers underneath.

The zombie needs a name tag, or it will burn in daylight and despawn. That single step is the one most builds forget.

Where the spawning platform goes

The game looks for valid spaces within a volume around the village centre. If the only valid space is your platform, every golem appears there.

Which means the work is mostly negative: removing every other valid space. Slabs, water, and non-solid blocks everywhere except the platform.

Villager requirements

Each villager needs a bed they can path to and a workstation. Without both, they do not count toward the village and no golem spawns.

Villagers also need to be able to see the zombie without reaching it. Glass or a one-block gap with a fence works; a solid wall does not.

Getting villagers there

Minecarts and rails, boats over water, or breeding on site. Transporting villagers is the most tedious part of the build and there is no shortcut worth the effort.

Breeding on site requires beds and food, and the mechanics are specific enough that a farm can fail entirely for want of a few potatoes. Professions, prices and villager behaviour covers what villagers need and why they sometimes refuse to cooperate.

Output and expectations

A well-built single-cell farm produces roughly 100 to 150 ingots per hour while you are within range. Multi-cell designs multiply that, at the cost of complexity and of running into the entity cap.

That is far more iron than any survival player needs, which is the usual reason people stop at one cell.

What iron is actually for

Hoppers are the answer. Any base with serious automation runs through iron at a rate that makes a farm worthwhile, and any base without automation does not need one.

Common failure modes

The last one catches people who build beside a village for convenience. The village’s own golem count blocks yours.

The spawn-proofing problem

Everything within the search volume that is not your platform has to be made invalid. That is a large volume and it includes the ground below and around the structure, not just the structure itself.

Should you build one?

If you are building hopper-based storage, item sorters or rail systems – yes, early. If you are building a house and exploring, no; ordinary mining supplies more iron than you will use.

It is one of the few farms where the decision is genuinely about playstyle rather than about progression.

A minimal build order

  1. Pick a location away from any existing village.
  2. Build the villager platform with beds and workstations.
  3. Bring three villagers.
  4. Add the named zombie behind glass.
  5. Build the spawning platform and spawn-proof everything else.
  6. Add the disposal and collection last.

Testing at step five before committing to the disposal system saves rebuilding, because that is where most designs fail.

Multi-cell designs and the entity cap

Stacking cells multiplies output until you run into the limit on how many entities the game will process near you. Past a certain point, adding cells slows the server without increasing ingots.

Three cells is the practical sweet spot for a survival world. Beyond that the returns fall off and the tick cost becomes noticeable to anyone else on the server.

Disposal methods compared

Lava is standard. The golem takes damage falling in and the water pushes the drops to the hoppers.

On a server

Check the rules first. Some servers restrict farm sizes or ban multi-cell designs outright, because a large iron farm run by every player is a real load. Building one and being asked to remove it is a wasted afternoon.
