Carry On review: pick up the chest, contents and all

Carry On does one thing: it lets you pick up a chest, a furnace or a mob and walk off with it. Twenty-five million downloads for a mod with no new blocks, no new items and no interface at all.

The problem it removes

Moving a base in vanilla Minecraft means emptying every container into your inventory, breaking it, carrying the items and the blocks, and refilling everything at the other end. For a base with forty chests that is an evening.

With Carry On you shift-click a chest and carry it, contents intact. Place it where you want it. The evening becomes twenty minutes.

Mobs too

Pick up a cow, a villager, a horse. This is the part that changes more than the containers, because transporting villagers in vanilla is the single most tedious logistics problem in the game.

The vanilla methods – boats, minecarts, a rail line – are all slow and all fail in specific ways. Picking one up and walking is not comparable.

Balance considerations

The mod is aware it is powerful and ships with a lot of configuration:

The slowness setting is the important one. Carrying a double chest at walking speed is a real cost; carrying it at full sprint is not.

Where it changes play the most

  1. Moving a base – the headline use.
  2. Villager transport – the largest single time saving.
  3. Setting up a trading hall – hours become minutes.
  4. Relocating farms – move the whole thing rather than rebuilding.
  5. Animal breeding – bringing two of something home without a lead and a fence corridor.

The trading hall case is where it has the biggest effect on progression, because the tedium of populating one is what stops most players building one at all. The mechanics that make a hall worth the effort are covered in trading halls and the zombie discount.

Player moving blocks between builds

On a server

Almost universally configured rather than run at defaults. The common restrictions are no carrying spawners, no carrying other players’ containers, and slowness enabled.

The spawner restriction is the one that matters – a portable spawner changes mob farm construction entirely, and most servers do not want that.

What it does not do

That last point requires the server to check. A protection plugin that does not know about the mod can be circumvented, which is worth verifying before installing it on a public server.

Comparison to the alternatives

Vanilla has no equivalent. The closest thing is a shulker box for items and a minecart for mobs, and neither preserves a furnace mid-smelt or a villager with its trades intact.

Other mods do similar things as part of larger systems – tech mods with block transporters – but Carry On is the only one that does it as a standalone with no other footprint.

Installation notes

Client and server both, and versions must match. It works on Fabric, NeoForge and Forge with builds across many Minecraft versions, and it is one of the more reliably ported mods in the ecosystem.

No dependencies, no config library required, and the default configuration is sensible enough to run unmodified in single player.

Verdict

A mod that removes tedium without removing challenge. Nothing it does makes the game easier in a combat or progression sense; it makes logistics faster. For anyone who has ever put off moving a base because of the chests, it is the obvious install.

Blocks worth blacklisting

The default blacklist covers the obvious cases. The modded machine problem is the one that requires testing per pack.

Mobs in detail

Passive mobs by default; hostile mobs and bosses excluded. The configuration allows both, and enabling hostile mob carrying produces some unexpected gameplay – carrying a creeper to a fight is a strategy.

For villagers specifically, the mod does what boats and minecarts do badly. A trading hall that would have taken an evening takes twenty minutes, which is enough to change whether people build one at all.

Verdict, briefly

Almost no downside in single player, and a handful of settings to check on a server. It removes an hour of tedium per base move and several hours per trading hall, and the mechanics that make a hall worth building are covered in the trading hall guide.
