Blockus review: a block pack that fills vanilla’s gaps rather than inventing new ones

What this mod does

It adds a large set of decorative blocks derived from materials already in the game – stone types, wood types, glass, concrete – as tiles, patterns, panels and variants that vanilla never made.

Key takeaways

Key features

The useful additions are the ones that close obvious gaps: tiled variants of common stone, patterned wood panels, glass in more colours and framings, and full stair and slab coverage for families that never had it.

Because the source materials are ordinary, a survival builder can actually use the pack at scale. That sounds trivial and is the main reason building mods either get used or sit in the mod list unused – a beautiful block that needs a rare drop is a creative-mode block.

Compatibility

Block-only mods carry almost no compatibility risk, since a block with no behaviour does not interact with anything else. It sits happily alongside worldgen, mob and performance mods.

How to install

Standard loader installation, safe on an existing world. Nothing generates in the world, so there is no seam and no need for a fresh map.

Is it worth installing

For anyone who builds seriously, yes. The variants it adds are the ones you notice missing halfway through a project, and having them changes what you attempt rather than just how you decorate.

The risk is the one every block mod carries: remove it and every block it placed disappears from your world, silently, leaving holes. Back up before removing, and treat it as a permanent decision once a build uses it.

Our view is that this category is where modding adds the most and gets the least attention. A mod that adds a boss gets a video; a mod that finally gives you stairs for a material you have used for ten years changes what you can build, and nobody makes a video about that. The palette question itself is covered in the palette guide.

Exterior wall using several block families

What it does not do

No new mechanics, no mobs, no worldgen, no progression. Blocks and only blocks. That is worth stating because it defines how it should be evaluated – the question is whether the additions fill gaps you actually hit, not whether the mod is exciting.

Where it overlaps with other block mods

Several building mods cover similar ground, and running three of them produces a creative inventory nobody can navigate. Two is the practical ceiling: one that extends vanilla families and one that adds a distinct material set.

The selection discipline that follows is the same one that applies to palettes – covered in the building block mods piece.

Using it in survival

Because the recipes use ordinary materials, a stone farm and a tree farm supply almost everything. That is the difference between a mod you build with and a mod you look at: the cost per block has to be low enough that a wall does not become a project.

On a server

Block-only mods are the safest category to add mid-season. Nothing regenerates, nothing changes for players who ignore it, and the only risk is the permanent one – once builds use the blocks, the mod cannot be removed without leaving holes.

Write it down in the server’s mod list with a note that it is load-bearing. The person who removes it in a year will not remember.

Verdict

A quiet, useful mod that will stay installed for years. It adds nothing exciting and closes a long list of small gaps, which is exactly what a builder wants and exactly what makes it easy to overlook.

Install it early in a world, keep the mod list short, and remember that block mods are effectively permanent once a build uses them.

Pairing

It works alongside anything, and the only real question is how many block mods to run at once. Two is usually the ceiling – the reasoning is in the block mods piece.

Survival versus creative use

In creative, block mods are free and the only cost is inventory clutter. In survival, the recipe matters: a block that takes three crafting steps and a rare ingredient will be used for trim and never for a wall.

The additions here are mostly one step from ordinary materials, which is why they end up in bulk use rather than as accents. That distinction – bulk block or accent block – is worth checking on any building mod before you plan a project around it.

Before a game update

Block mods usually update quickly, but a world that depends on one is a world that waits for it. If you are planning a large build on a server that follows game versions closely, check the mod’s update history first – a project that has shipped on time for three versions will probably ship on time for the fourth.
