Summary
- 26.3 Snapshot 7, on 4 August 2026, added concrete stairs and slabs in all sixteen colours.
- Different explorer maps started appearing in some abandoned camps in the same snapshot.
- Mojang described these as the final features entering testing for the drop.
Builders had been asking for concrete stairs since concrete arrived. The answer came in the last feature snapshot of the cycle, six weeks before release, alongside the map system that turned this drop into an exploration one.
Sixteen colours, two shapes
Concrete is the only fully flat, saturated material in the game, and until this snapshot it existed as a cube and nothing else. Stairs and slabs give it roofs, steps, trim and half-height detail – the entire vocabulary of shapes, in one go, across every colour.
Wool stairs and slabs arrived in the same drop, giving the two large colour families their missing geometry at the same time.

Maps in the camps
The same snapshot started putting different explorer maps into some abandoned camps. That is the moment the drop’s two halves connected: a structure you find while exploring now points you at the next thing to explore.
By release the map list covered eight biomes and four structure types, and camp chests – including secret ones – were a primary source alongside cartographer villagers.

“Final features” as a schedule marker
When Mojang says the final features are in testing, the remaining calendar is fixed: pre-releases, then release candidates, then the drop. For 26.3 that meant three more snapshots of refinement, a pre-release on 1 September, and release on 15 September.
For anyone planning a build around new blocks, this is the snapshot to start from. Nothing after it removed a feature.

What to build with them
The obvious answer is modern architecture, and the less obvious one is that concrete slabs make good floors in any style because they are the flattest surface available. The palette discipline still applies – sixteen colours is a trap, and two plus a neutral will carry a build.
Why stairs and slabs matter more than new blocks
A block you cannot cut is a block you can only use as a flat surface. Stairs and slabs are what turn a colour into a building material, and the blocks that get used in real builds are almost always the ones with a full family.
Concrete waited years for this. Sixteen saturated colours with no way to make an edge is why concrete mostly appeared in pixel art rather than architecture.
Saturation is still the problem
Cutting concrete does not make it quieter. Sixteen flat, fully saturated colours are still the hardest blocks in the game to use well, and the failure mode is unchanged: a build that looks like a colour swatch.
The ratio that works is roughly one loud block to eight quiet ones, and the palette guide goes through how to pick the eight.
Where concrete stairs actually help
Roof edges, mostly. A roof is where a palette either works or collapses, and until now a concrete build had to change material at the roofline – which is exactly the place a material change is most visible.
If your roofs still default to a forty-five degree stair slope, the shapes beyond that are worth more to a build than any single block addition.
Also in Snapshot 7
- Explorer map adjustments.
- Continued balance work ahead of the pre-release phase.
- No new biome content – that was settled in Snapshot 1.

Concrete versus terracotta versus wool
All three give you sixteen colours and they are not interchangeable. Concrete is flat and saturated. Terracotta is muted and slightly textured, which is why it carries large surfaces far better. Wool sits between them and reads as fabric rather than material.
The usual mistake is reaching for concrete because the colour is right, when terracotta in the same hue would have worked and concrete will not.
Where the new stairs earn their place
- Roof edges on a build that was already concrete.
- Stepped foundations, where a slab used to be the only option.
- Interior trim, where a full block is too heavy.
Note what is not on that list: whole roofs. A concrete roof is a large saturated surface, which is the thing to avoid regardless of what shape the blocks come in.

A closing thought on block families. When Mojang completes one – stairs, slabs, walls, buttons – it is usually responding to a decade of builders working around the gap rather than to a design plan. Concrete waited a long time, and the wait is why so many concrete builds from earlier years have a sudden material change at the roofline. Those builds are now easier to finish than they were to start.
