Summary
- 26.3 Pre-Release 1 arrived on 1 September 2026 and restored exclusive fullscreen on macOS.
- From that point the cycle was bug fixing, with no new features.
- Three pre-releases and three release candidates followed in two weeks.
Display modes are the least glamorous part of a game client and the fastest way to make it unusable. The 26.3 cycle spent two months on them, and the first pre-release is where that work surfaced.
The macOS fix
Exclusive fullscreen became available again on macOS, having been part of the display-mode problems documented back in Snapshot 4 in July. Windows and Wayland crashes were listed as known issues then; by the pre-release phase the platform work had caught up.
Exclusive fullscreen matters because it gives the game the display directly rather than sharing it with the desktop compositor, which on some systems is a meaningful difference in input latency and frame pacing.

What a pre-release means for your world
Features are locked. From 1 September, nothing was added to Wilderness Bound – the remaining changes were fixes, technical adjustments and the data pack format moving to 121.0 by Pre-Release 3.
That makes the pre-release the first genuinely safe point to test your own world against the coming drop, especially if you run data packs or a modded setup.

The run to release
Pre-Release 2 on 4 September, breaking the Tuesday rhythm as pre-releases do. Pre-Release 3 on the 8th. Release candidates on the 10th, 11th and 14th – three of them, each fixing another handful of issues. Then the drop on 15 September.
Three release candidates in five days is more than usual and is worth reading as diligence rather than trouble. A candidate exists to be replaced if something critical appears, and each replacement is the process doing its job.

What shipped
Wilderness Bound, on 15 September 2026, as Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50 – the dappled forest, poplar, abandoned camps, straw beds, cushions, wool and concrete stairs and slabs, and explorer maps for twelve destinations.
Platform-specific fixes and why they land late
A macOS-only fix in Pre-Release 1 is normal. Platform issues surface during the snapshot phase and get fixed once the feature set has stopped moving, because fixing a platform bug against a moving target wastes the fix.
It is also a reasonable signal that the build is close. Platform polish is late-cycle work.
What pre-release means for mods
Nothing, yet. Loaders target releases, and a pre-release profile is vanilla until the release build lands and the loader follows, usually within days.
If you are deciding which loader to be on before the update, the differences are smaller than the arguments suggest and mostly come down to which mods you actually want – Fabric, NeoForge or Forge lays out the decision honestly.
Update-day checklist
- Back up the world before opening it in the new version. There is no downgrade.
- Do not update a modded profile until every mod you use has released.
- Test performance on the release build, not the pre-release – they differ.
That third point catches people every cycle. Pre-releases carry debug overhead that the release build does not.
If the update costs you frames
Every drop adds work for the renderer, and a version that ran fine in June can feel worse in September on the same hardware. The fixes are well understood at this point, and the five mods worth installing covers what each one actually addresses rather than promising a general speedup.
Pre-Release 1 arrived 1 September 2026. Wilderness Bound released two weeks later on 15 September.
Why macOS gets its own fixes
Apple’s graphics stack is not the one Minecraft was built against, and the gap has widened rather than closed over the last few years. Most macOS-specific issues in Minecraft are rendering or window management rather than game logic.
They tend to surface late because the snapshot audience skews heavily towards Windows, so a macOS-only problem can sit unreported for weeks.
Reporting a platform bug usefully
- State the OS version and the chip, not just “Mac”.
- Say whether it happens in a fresh world with no packs or mods.
- Include the exact build, e.g. 26.3 Pre-Release 1, not “the latest snapshot”.
A report with those three lines gets triaged; one without them usually gets closed as incomplete.
The 26.3 endgame
Pre-Release 1 on 1 September, further pre-releases through the following fortnight, and release on 15 September 2026 as Wilderness Bound – Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50. Two weeks from first pre-release to release, matching the 26.2 cycle almost exactly.
For anyone planning their update: the safest window is about two weeks after release for vanilla and about six for modded, which in practice means vanilla players were in Wilderness Bound by the end of September and modded setups moved across through October. Neither of those is a rule, and both have held for the last several cycles closely enough to plan around.
