The vanilla stronghold is a maze of identical corridors with a library in it somewhere and a portal at the end. It is the structure you tolerate rather than explore. Dungeons and Taverns Stronghold Overhaul replaces it with 417 rooms.
Version 3.0.1 landed on 19 September with 26.3 support.
What 417 rooms means
Vanilla’s stronghold is assembled from roughly a dozen room types. That is why it feels repetitive – you have seen every piece within two minutes and the rest is recombination.
This overhaul supplies 417, plus five sub-stronghold sections, a nether portal room chamber, and stronghold rooms that break the surface. The last of those is the most visible change: a stronghold that has partially collapsed into daylight is a landmark rather than something you find by throwing eyes at the sky.
It also adds unique trades for stronghold librarians, which gives the library a reason to exist beyond bookshelves.
Standalone, like the rest of the series
It does not require the main Dungeons and Taverns mod, and the main mod does not include these changes. Each overhaul in the series is its own project, installable alone.
That is worth restating because the naming reliably confuses people. If you already run the Ancient City overhaul, this is a separate download, and the two coexist without conflict.
Datapack, Fabric, Forge and NeoForge versions all exist. Client optional, server required – so a vanilla client sees it.

The 3.0.1 hotfix
Two fixes, both the kind that produce silent wrongness rather than errors.
Loot table files had erroneous number formats, causing loot rolls to be inconsistent. That is a bug you would experience as bad luck rather than as a fault, which is the hardest category to notice.
Some structure jigsaw formats were erroneous, meaning parts of the structure were unable to spawn. The fix restores complexity that had been missing – so a stronghold generated before this version is a smaller stronghold than the mod intends.
If you generated strongholds on 3.0.0, they are incomplete and the only fix is new terrain.
Why strongholds are a good target
Three structural reasons this is a better overhaul target than most.
Everyone visits. The stronghold is not optional content – it is the route to the End. Every survival world goes there.
It is underground. Underground structures can be arbitrarily large without affecting the landscape, so there is room for 417 rooms in a way there is not for a surface build.
Vanilla’s version is the weakest. The ancient city and the trial chambers are both well-made. The stronghold predates that standard and shows it.
The result is a mod that changes a mandatory experience rather than an optional one, which is rare and is most of its value.

Difficulty, unchanged
This is a layout and loot mod. Silverfish still behave as silverfish, the portal room works the same way, and nothing has been made harder.
What changes is time. A 417-room stronghold takes considerably longer to explore than a vanilla one, and finding the portal is no longer a two-minute job. Bring more torches than usual and expect to map it – the cartography habit is more useful here than in most structures.
The surface-breaking rooms cut the other way, making the stronghold easier to find in the first place.
Verdict
Install it at world creation on any world that has not yet reached the End. It changes the least interesting mandatory structure in the game into the most interesting one, costs nothing on the client, and it is the highest-impact single-structure overhaul available.
Skip it if your world’s stronghold is already found and cleared, since new generation will not reach it. And if you only want one overhaul from the series, the choice is between this and the Ancient City – this one, because more players will see it. The wider structure roundup has the vanilla baseline.
Finding it, which is now easier
Surface-breaking stronghold rooms are the quiet usability change in this overhaul. A vanilla stronghold gives no surface indication at all – you throw eyes of ender and dig.
A stronghold that has collapsed into daylight can be found the way other structures are found: by looking. That does not replace eyes of ender, but it means a stronghold can be stumbled into, which vanilla’s never is.
For a server, that changes the End timeline. A player who finds a stronghold by accident at hour twenty reaches the End far earlier than one who has to gather blaze rods first.
Librarian trades
The unique stronghold librarian trades are the part that gives the library a purpose. Vanilla’s stronghold library is bookshelves and a chest, and the bookshelves are worth more broken than standing.
Trades attached to librarians who only appear there make the room a destination rather than a material source. It also means clearing the stronghold and curing a villager are different activities with different rewards, which is more design than the vanilla room has.
